New Master’s programme: Part-Time Degree Programme in Social Work
This programme is offered by HAWK since the 2024/25 winter semester. Information on application and admission is available on the Application page.
Social work is characterised by processes of social transformation: In the Master’s programme, we analyse these in small groups in order to develop innovative methods and effective approaches for productive social work.
What does the degree programme deal with?
The programme is aimed at people who have a first degree in social work or another relevant subject and want to qualify for management positions or academic careers - without having to take a career break.
The programme focuses on:
- current debates in the field
- the social and socio-political context
- analysis of practice, research, concept development and science communication
- management of teams and organisations
The mix of online and classroom-based sessions and self-study components makes the programme easy to combine with work, or family responsibilities, for example.
What can I do after graduation?
The degree qualifies you to work at the highest level (Höherer Dienst) in the civil service, to take on a management role in social work or to pursue an academic career.
It will also enable you to pursue organisational consultancy, or – through the acquisition of business start-up skills – self-employment.
Furthermore, it will entitle you to study for a doctorate and pursue a career in research, evaluation or teaching.
What makes the degree programme special?
The blended learning structure consists of 40 per cent online teaching (one evening per week) and 60 per cent face-to-face sessions during weekends.
Learning in small groups allows students to engage in intensive discussion and promotes an enjoyable learning environment.
The programme has a high practical focus throughout: You identify your own professional interests and work on them across a variety of modules during the course of your studies, e.g. deploying empirical social research methodology or considering them from the perspective of organisational development.
