Previous studies

Relevant previous studies (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in social work or social pedagogy totalling 210 credits, or 180 credits plus state accreditation (recognised probationary period of at least six months).

Where a course of study in social work or social pedagogy awards 180 credits but does not have state accreditation, a learning agreement must be put in place that provides for the acquisition of an additional 30 credits in the context of the Master’s programme, and the verification of such credits prior to admission to the Master’s Thesis module.

Applications can be submitted during the Bachelor's programme

If you have not yet fully completed your Bachelor’s degree at the time of applying or have not yet received your Bachelor’s certificate, it will suffice in your application to provide an up-to-date overview of your progress on the Bachelor’s programme with details of the ECTS credits you have achieved – you must have gained a minimum number – along with a provisional average grade. You can submit your Bachelor's certificate at a later stage.

The minimum number of ECTS credits required for admission is set out in the admission regulations (in German).

Pre-study work placement

No pre-study work placement is required.

Applying through the HISinOne portal

Applications should be submitted online through the HAWK HISinOne application portal (in German). The portal closes at 23:59 on the final day of the application period.

Applicants with a German university entrance qualification can upload their application documents to the HISinOne portal as part of the online application process.

Applicants with an international university entrance qualification should use the "Application for Admission" PDF file, which can be downloaded from the HISinOne portal after completing the online application. This Application for Admission must be sent to HAWK by post, together with the required documents.

Mandatory documents: all applicants

• Proof of university entrance qualification
• CV in tabular form, including a passport photograph
• Certificate verifying the applicant’s first degree in social work or social pedagogy or another relevant subject (or where applicable, provisional certification indicating the average grade achieved and credits awarded)
• Certificate of exmatriculation
• Proof of identity
• Proof of health insurance

Additional documents with regard to international university entrance qualifications

• Application for Admission (for a place on the degree programme), which can be retrieved from the HISinOne portal after completing the online application

Translation of the university entrance qualification: If your university entrance qualification is not in German, you must submit:

• a certified copy of the original qualification; and
• a sworn translation of the qualification in English or German

Proof of German language competence: If your university entrance qualification was not acquired in German, please submit one of the following proofs of German language proficiency:

• Level 4 TestDaF issued by the TestDaF Institute
• DSH (German Language Test for University Entrance) Level 2
• Goethe Certificate C2
• telc certificate in German C1 University
• DSD (German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs) Level 2

Additional documents for specific cases

• Proof of recognised probationary period and state accreditation (only required in the case of a Bachelor's degree with 180 credit points)
• Proof of employment as a social worker or social education worker (if applicable)
• Explanation in writing of your motivation for studying, maximum 1 page (for second degree applicants)
• Copy of passport and residence permit (if you do not hold German citizenship. Copies do not need to be certified)

1. Letter of admission

Successful applicants will be sent a letter of admission by post. The letter of admission can also be viewed as a PDF on the HAWK HISinOne portal.

Your letter of admission will outline the enrolment process and specify two deadlines you will need to meet.

2. Apply for enrolment online

If you wish to take up your place, the first thing you need to do once you have received your letter of admission is apply to enrol online via the HISinOne portal – by the first deadline set out in your letter of admission.

3. Apply for enrolment

Once you have completed the online enrolment process, you will be able to retrieve your "Application for Enrolment" PDF from the HISinOne portal. Sign the application and send it by post to HAWK, together with the documents specified in the application – by the second deadline set out in your letter of admission.
