“Arborists and urban trees are individualists and each one of them is important to us.”
What is this study programme all about?
If you decide to study arboriculture, you will learn all about the protection, care and sustainable development of trees and shrubs (“arbor” = Latin for tree) located in urban areas. The aim is to create very good conditions for them in built-up areas. When focusing on the following topics, you will find out how nature shapes the cityscape and how you can help to make sure that environmental protection and urban development complement one another:
- Urban tree management
- Tree control and traffic safety
- Urban and landscape planning
- Economic sciences
- Specialist law
- Communication and personnel management
What can I do with it later?
With these special qualifications, there will be many doors open to you for future employment. In addition to jobs in planning and appraisal offices, in tree care companies, in nature conservation offices for green spaces or in garden and landscaping businesses, setting up a company of your own will also be an option for you. You can also continue your studies by enrolling in various Master’s programs, e.g. “Urban tree and forest management” here at the HAWK.
What makes the study programme special?
HAWK was the first – and for two decades the only – German university to offer a programme in arboriculture. This long-standing experience makes our graduates highly sought-after on the job market.
Another special feature of this programme is its focus on actual practice. You will take part in many different practical lectures and exercises in small semester groups of about 40 students.
You will also benefit in your studies from our leading research in the areas of tree pathology, tree diagnosis, tree value assessment and urban soils. Publicly appointed and sworn experts are also among your teachers.
