Cosy. Close to nature. Personal.

Holzminden as a place to study

Holzminden is located in the heart of the Weserbergland region and has a population of around 20,000. The small town is cosy and lively with numerous half-timbered houses, and close to nature.

Academic education has been a tradition in Holzminden since the 19th century and the university is an important part of the region, so people feel connected to the HAWK. As one of around 1,300 students, you are always welcome.

Why study in Holzminden

  • The small-town structure enables students to learn and work in small groups, which is what makes the HAWK in Holzminden so familiar.
  • Students benefit from a close network and short distances: There is plenty of scope for students to integrate part-time jobs or practical experience into their everyday lives here. This creates an ideal combination of theory and practice.
  • Holzminden offers ideal conditions for focussed study and a decelerated everyday life – without the hustle and bustle of the city.

Activities and culture

From the Kükenfest in spring to the flea market on the Weser promenade, summer market concerts and the autumn street food festival to the popular Christmas market with ice skating rink: Holzminden offers attractive events all year round.

A particular highlight is the International Street Theatre Festival, which takes place every two years at Whitsun and has a nationwide appeal.
If the weather is bad, the former mine – which has been converted into an escape room – offers a fascinating change of scene. Groups can strengthen their team spirit in two reconstructed mining tunnels, solving puzzles together at different levels of difficulty.

Holzminden, the “city of scents and flavours”, has created a unique flagship project in Europe called Sensoria – an interactive adventure house for the senses of smell and taste. Here you can find out what it smells like on the moon; how our sense of taste and smell influence us in everyday life; and create your own perfume. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Corvey is located directly on the other side of the Weser and is also easy to reach by bike or train. In addition to a guided tour of the former monastery, summer concerts, garden and art festivals regularly take place here.

Nature and sport

If you want to get active, you can take advantage of the many opportunities in the surrounding countryside: cycling on the Weser cycle path, hiking in the surrounding mountains or canoe tours on the River Weser.

Swimming pools and outdoor pools, as well as the leisure centre at Godelheimer See, are perfect places to cool off in. There are also many sports clubs and fitness centres in Holzminden.

Holzminden is surrounded by several protected landscape areas and nature parks. In the nearby Solling-Vogler Nature Park, clear streams and wide meadow valleys enable you to switch off from everyday life and offer an oasis of calm, especially during the exam phase.

Housing and mobility

You can live very well in Holzminden! Affordable rents, many opportunities to help shape social life or a spontaneous picnic with friends on the banks of the Weser – you can simply feel at home.

One of the great advantages of living in a small town is that you can easily get from A to B on foot. If you want to travel a little faster, it rarely takes longer than ten minutes by bike to reach your destination within the city.
Most students use the train to get to more distant places. Favourite destinations for shopping or clubbing are Höxter (on the other side of the Weser), Hannover and Paderborn.

Map of Holzminden

The HAWK campus is located directly in the city centre, on Unterer Teich where you will also find many flat shares and apartments. When you start your studies, you will quickly find your way around, thanks to the central location.
