How we think and work

Anyone who decides to study product design is open to new topics, innovative developments and the needs of their users. In all areas of life, products support the completion of tasks and fulfil their function as tools.

Well-designed products fulfil their functions and define how we deal with our world.
Prof. Andreas Schulz

It is very important that the interface between man and machine is designed intuitively. Communication, transport, work, life, medicine – these and other topics determine the fields of activity in product design and require that we look at them with a critical eye in order to design useful products that make sense. Product design is present in our everyday lives like almost no other occupational field, which is why we must be particularly aware of environmental protection, the use of materials and their sustainability or recyclability. Especially against the background of digital tools, experience with materials in the design process is of decisive importance.

In the competence field of Product Design, the Faculty of Design offers you:

  • Approaches to user-oriented needs analysis
  • A system for the creative development of products
  • Knowledge for the visualisation of your idea starting with the sketch, to the model construction and right on up to the digital representation
  • State-of-the-art development tools in design-specific technologies for model and prototype construction and product development
  • How to professionally communicate your designs to the customer
  • Option of spending an internship semester or a semester abroad at one of our numerous partner universities around the world

After completing your studies, you will be qualified to work in a design office, in the design department of a company or freelance. The Bachelor of Arts also qualifies you to apply for a Master of Arts degree, which is also offered at the Faculty of Design at HAWK in Hildesheim.
