New study programme BEng Engineering Sciences

Winter semester 2025/26 will see the launch of HAWK’s new BEng study programme in Engineering Sciences.

This new study programme enables you to explore your interests in the first two semesters, before choosing your main field of study (major).

You will work on practical projects every semester, initially at HAWK and later in collaboration with local companies, giving you early insight into various job profiles.

What does the study programme deal with?

Actively shaping society and industry requires a deep understanding of technical issues. In HAWK’s Engineering Sciences study programme, you will prepare for the challenges of the next generation.

You will combine topics relating to Industry 4.0 and digitalised production processes with cutting-edge fields such as sustainability, innovative materials and electrical engineering.

Choose from 7 specialisations

1. Sustainable Production Technology
Develops environmentally friendly and resource-efficient processes to manufacture products with a minimal ecological footprint – for sustainable and responsible industrial operations.

2. Mechatronics
Vereint Mechanik, Elektronik und Informatik, um intelligente Systeme zu schaffen – sie ist die Schlüsseltechnologie für automatisierte Prozesse in einer zunehmend vernetzten Welt.

3. Electrical Engineering
Combines mechanics, electronics and computer science to create intelligent systems – it is the key technology for automated processes in an increasingly networked world.

4. Materials Innovation
Enables the development of new materials with improved properties that increase performance and sustainability in technologies and thus offer solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.

5. Information Technology
Entwickelt und verbessert Technologien, die wir täglich nutzen, um miteinander zu kommunizieren.

6. Maschinenbau
Develops and improves the technologies that we use for communicating with each other in our daily lives.

7. Laser and Plasma Technology
Revolutionises manufacturing with high-precision materials processing and innovative surface treatment, making processes more efficient, flexible and environmentally friendly.

What can I do after graduation?

Graduates go on to work in industry, for example in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology or process engineering, where they are responsible for planning, developing and optimising products and processes.

Engineers are in high demand, in Germany and beyond. Particularly the small and medium-sized companies in the Göttingen area value the high practical relevance of this study programme.

Potential career opportunities

Research and development
You can work in research and development, either in companies or at universities, where you will develop innovative technologies and materials.

Project management
Engineers often take on project management roles, leading teams, planning projects and ensuring that goals are achieved on time and within budget.

Consultancy
Some engineers work as consultants to support companies with technical issues and find solutions to complex problems.

Self-employment
With an engineering background, you also have the opportunity to set up your own company or work as a freelancer. HAWK offers various entrepreneurship  programmes to help you on your way.

Switching to related fields
Engineers can also switch to other fields, such as management, teaching or business management, where their technical and problem-solving skills are highly valued.

Further education and specialisation
Many graduates choose to pursue further education, such as a Master’s degree or a doctorate, to specialise in a specific area. HAWK offers 3 postgraduate Master’s programmes  as well as opportunities to study for a doctorate.

What makes the study programme special?

  • You don’t choose any main fields of study until you are in your second semester. This gives you time to learn the basics and the freedom to explore – without extending the standard period of study.
  • Each semester, you will work on practical projects together with other students and sometimes in collaboration with local businesses.
  • The study programme was developed in consultation with local industry and is therefore particularly geared towards potential career paths.
  • Within the specialisations, you have a wide choice of courses to suit your personal interests.
  • The staff-to-student ratio for BEng Engineering Sciences is 1:10, meaning there is one lecturer for every 10 students. This provides a good basis for helping students to overcome any difficult patches they might encounter during their studies.
  • If you wish to change your subject, you can do so easily, even at a later stage in your studies.
