Juan Montoya Torres, student at the University UPB in Colombia, studied one year at HAWK and got to know the German culture intensively. In this interview he talks about his experiences as an exchange student in Hildesheim and reports about his everyday life as a student.
Tell us, which insights, courses and experiences did you take with you at HAWK?
I liked the photography course very much. The course took place mainly online, yet the instructor prepared the units in an exciting way and gave us a lot to take away. I had many positive experiences with the professors at HAWK. They were very helpful and interested in us.
Where and how did you live during your semester abroad?
I lived in a large shared apartment with another 4 people. My roommates were from Germany. Living in a shared apartment was super helpful for me and a great experience.
What was the biggest challenge for you?
Language-wise it was a big challenge for me and living in a small town like Hildesheim was also not always easy because I am from a big city. In my hometown, there are many more inhabitants and hustle and bustle. In the beginning, I had to get used to the new environment.
Living in a shared apartment was super helpful for me and a great experience.
To what extent were you able to gain new experiences and develop yourself further?
I was able to grow personally during my time in Germany and I developed more responsibility over my life. I learned to be determined and hardworking. It was not easy to find a job and to integrate into the culture but it has strengthened me personally.
What was an absolute highlight for you, professionally or culturally?
The freedom to travel in Germany was very impressive for me. Also the exchange with the other students and living together with the locals was a highlight for me.
Do you have any tips for future incoming students?
I recommend new incomings to know or learn how to use In-Design, because HAWK works a lot with this program. You should also be aware that you should take care of everything in Germany on your own. You have to organize a lot on your own and inform yourself on site.
