German university system

There are different types of higher education institutions in Germany: Universities, universities of applied sciences (German acronym HAW), universities of applied sciences (German acronym FH) and private universities.

Focus of different higher education institutions:

  • HAWs and FHs are often very practice- and career-oriented. Study includes practical assignments, e.g. in laboratories and project groups. There are often work placement semesters.
  • Universities also have practical components, but the focus is on theoretical instruction.

Most universities in Germany are state universities and have no tuition fees. HAWK is a state university.
