Vita

In 2006 Achim Loewen was appointed Professor for Energy Technology and Environmental Management at the University of Applied Science and Arts in Göttingen. He is director of the department of Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies and leads a research team of about 20 employees, mainly dealing with bioenergy, waste treatment and climate protection. Before, he worked for fifteen years with the Fraunhofer Society, Europe’s largest organization for applied research and development. He was scientific employee and business unit leader at the Fraunhofer Center for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology in Oberhausen, Germany, and director of the Fraunhofer Center for Energy and Environment in Pittsburgh, USA. His major research focus was on the optimization of energy supply systems, on bioenergy and on waste and waste water treatment.

Current research includes the optimization of biogas processes, investigations on the energetic use of wood, the production of biochar by means of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and pyrolysis, the optimization of decentral energy generation technologies and their integration into energy supply systems with a special focus on on-demand-generation of electricity, and eco-balances (LCA) regarding process chains for generation of electricity, heat and fuels from renewable resources.

Until December12th, 2021 Professor Loewen was chairman of the board of the ANS e.V. (an association dealing with the use of secondary raw materials and with climate protection, which merged with the German Association for waste management January 1st, 2022). He is member of the board of the Lower Saxon Competence Center for Renewable Raw Materials 3N e.V. and member of the scientific board of the Lower Saxon Ministry for Nutrition, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and member of the KTBL Working Group for Energy. He also is guest professor at Hefei University in China, with which he closely cooperates in research and education.
